Day at the Races Annual Scholarship Fundraiser
HU Alternative Spring Breakers 2016
On Friday March 18, 2016 HUAC Baltimore hosted a well deserved soul food buffet dinner for a group of current HU students that spent their Spring Break in Baltimore city doing community service. Since 2013 these groups of students have spent their vacation time working with Baltimore youth to combat gang violence, neighborhood beautification and revitalization, and academic tutoring. Money was raised through donations to fund this event that these students have looked forward to for the past 4 years. Local alumni also attended to fellowship and trade stories of there times at our beloved HU.

Back-to-School!: Summer Recap
Ahh yes! It's about that time of year. Football season is around the corner, the weather will be getting cooler, and the leaves will be changing soon. A new class of Bison have been greeted by the festivities of Freshmen Move-In; meanwhile, Bison of classes past have already begun to plan out their homecoming.
While we enjoy the last bit of summer, let's tell you what we've been up to during these last few humid months. Ok, so it's been a while since we updated you. We'll take fault for that. Sorry. You forgive us right? It's still all #BisonLove right? Is that a smile we see creeping across your face? Yes? All is forgiven? Ok! Now that we've gotten all of the formalities out of the way, let's get down to business.
This year's Day at the Races went off without a hitch. The event takes place annually at Baltimore's famous Pimilco Racetrack. The Home of the Preakness. Day at the Races serves as a fundraiser for the club's Mamie Carroll Woodford Scholarship. Furthermore, it's a great networking event for alumni across the DC, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area. The tickets were sold out with over 65 people in attendance. The group enjoyed food, drinks and line dancing. Billy Mickens of Spirit Feet had people out of their seats, learning all of the latest line dances!
The success of Day at the Races meant plenty of funds for our 2015 Mamie C. Woodford Scholarship winners. Yes, plural! This year we named more than one winner. We know what you're thinking. How many winners? Who were they? Stay tuned! We'll reveal the winners right here at a later date.

Next, came the Incoming Freshman Cook-Out. HUACB personally welcomes Baltimore-area Howard Freshmen by hosting a cookout annually. On Saturday, July 18th, we headed out to Belmont Park in Parkville, MD for food and fun. Club members also revealed the winners of the Mamie C. Woodford Scholarship during the cookout. There we go again, mentioning those scholarship winners. We're going to tell you, we promise!
Speaking of the Nation's Classic... Howard University takes on Hampton Institute University Friday, September 18th, 2015 at RFK Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30pm and we plan to be there! Are you coming with us? We'll keep you posted with the details. Email us or join our mailing list to stay in the loop with all things HUACB!

That brings us to present day. The club's first Fall meeting will take place Saturday, September 12th at the Enoch Pratt Library Free Library, 6310 Reisterstown Rd. Baltimore, MD 21215. We'll have plenty to discuss! Our new administration will be taking the reigns as we prepare for The Nation's Classic and Homecoming among other things. We look forward to seeing you!

A Night at the Movies
Heeeyyyy (In our best James Brown voice).. that guy looks familiar. If that's what you find yourself thinking as you look at the picture above, you have good reason. You might recognize Chadwick Boseman from his critically-acclaimed portrayal of Jackie Robinson in 42 (2013). If that's not it, you may recognize Boseman from seeing him around Howard's Campus. That's right, Chadwick Boseman ate in The Punch Out just like the rest of us. He is a proud Howard University Alumnus.
For that reason, the Howard University Alumni Association is supporting his latest role as the legendary James Brown in the biopic Get On Up. If that's not a good enough reason, there's a bigger picture for you to see here. Get On Up is the latest in a modern-wave of Hollywood films that are driven by a majority African-American cast. The Best Man Holiday, Think Like a Man Too, and About Last Night are few of the latest examples that hit it big at the box office. Let's make sure that Get On Up is the next.
In the 90s, movies and television depicted everyday characters in a full spectrum of brown complexions. Somewhere along the way we lost that. Now's our chance to get it back. Howard University has always stood at the helm in the betterment of the African-American community; let's continue that legacy.
Join the Howard University Alumni Club of Baltimore for Movie Night! Feel free to bring a friend or the family with you.
You can purchase tickets early here. See you at the movies!

Mamie C. Woodford Scholarship 2014- Meet Our Winner: Ambe Sennon
| Ambe Sennon with his sisters Asiyah, 14 years old and Saidah, 8 years old. |
What is fondly known as the “Bison
spirit” is what made Mamie Carroll Woodford become the namesake of this scholarship.
She achieved the high goals she set for herself and remained diligent to her
passion for higher education. Her dedication made her an asset to Howard
University, Baltimore City and the Howard University Alumni Association. We see
this same type of dedication in our 2014 recipient of the Mamie Carroll
Woodford Scholarship, Ambe Sennon.
Determination, laser-beam
focus and, as oxymoronic as it may sound, the ability to see the bigger picture
were the qualities that made Ambe a stand-out. Although he will be a Freshman
in Fall 2014, he already possesses the type of tenacity that we have seen throughout
history amongst Howard University students. On paper, both Ambe and his mentors
painted the portrait of a young man with the resilience of someone beyond his
years. In conversation, it quickly becomes obvious that this is the core of Mr.
Sennon’s being.
“Howard University does not support White Supremacy.” This is
not the type of phrase that comes to mind when you think of a welcome banner,
but that’s exactly what Ambe’s welcome banner read. Perhaps we should explain.
While in the 11th
grade, Ambe watched the tragedy of Trayvon Martin unfold. Ambe, along with
Baltimoreans from all walks of life, participated in the 300 Man March. The 300
Man March was one of the many rallies that took place nationwide calling for
justice for Trayvon. Howard University caught Mr. Sennon’s eye when he saw a
picture of Howard students protesting for the same cause, holding a banner that
read: “Howard University does not
support White Supremacy.”
“I needed to be there,” said Ambe.
His visit to the campus the
following April confirmed that need.
“It felt so welcoming,” Ambe
says as he reflects on the visit.
The campus is a big change
from his Greenmount Avenue neighborhood. His peers deal with violence on the
regular. As Ambe describes his neighborhood, the local news is on television in
the background. It tells the story of a crime involving guys that are probably
his same age. “It is time for a change,” He says.
Now that the destination was
set, the journey began. For Ambe, applying for scholarships seemed harder than
applying for admission. At one point he was applying for two scholarships a
day. The Mamie C. Woodford scholarship was one he applied to after it was
suggested by his school advisor. Ambe had applied to so many scholarships
without so much as a thank-you-for-applying email in response. Little did he
know, The Mamie C. Woodford Scholarship would be different.
“Wow! You never know what can
happen,” was the thought that Ambe says came to his mind once he found out he
won. The win has only added fuel to his fire. “Once I say something I
have to prove to myself I can do it. I know in the long run it will really help
me out so I don’t complain.”
Ambe also sites his mom and
his two sisters as his motivation. He says his future success will be just as
much for them as it will be for himself.
In the Fall, Ambe will be
majoring in Marketing. After a summer job piqued his interest in the field, he
plans to use that experience to excel in the School of Business. He is also
looking forward to the diversity of Howard University. The backgrounds of the students
that walk the campus of Howard will span even further than those that walked
the hallways of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Ambe’s new alma mater. While on campus,
he even hopes to get in touch with his Trinidadian culture.
Howard University is the
perfect place to get better acquainted with the African diaspora. The Bison Spirit
is demonstrated again in that desire to want to learn more. We hope Ambe finds
all that he seeks. The Howard University Alumni Club of Baltimore is happy to
have Ambe Sennon as our 2014 Mamie C. Woodford Scholarship recipient.

Alternative Spring Break 2014- Baltimore
![]() |
| ASB- Baltimore 2013 at New Psalmist Baptist Church |
In recent years, ASB has added Baltimore to their list of cities. The participants will tackle the issue of gang violence. Students will be doing a variety of activities throughout the city. The Howard University Alumni Club of Baltimore appreciates all that ASB will be doing in order to combat this prominent issue amongst Baltimore youth. To show our appreciation, we will have a dinner welcoming them.
On Tuesday, March 11th at 7pm the ASB dinner will take place at New Psalmist Baptist Church. Bishop Walter S. Thomas is gracious enough to open the doors of his congregation to us. Bishop Thomas is a graduate of the Howard University School of Divinity.
We would love for you to join us for dinner! Consider this your formal invitation. It's a great chance to redeem yourself for those past Spring Breaks we promised we're not judging you for (just kidding, we're still not judging though).
BONUS: The club will sponsor a few current students who would like to come as well. So if you're a Howard student or alumni in the Baltimore area and would like to join us for dinner next week, email us at huacb1@hotmail.com. There are limited seats available.

Happy Hour at Colin's Seafood and Grill
Delicious seafood entrees, colorful drinks and Bison love filled the atmosphere at Colin's Seafood and Grill. On Friday, January 31st, club members caught up with each other over happy hour. Colin's Seafood and Grill is a newly opened restaurant located in Randallstown, MD and they played a gracious host.
Club members greeted each other with warm embraces and big smiles as they entered the back room of the bar. After everyone got settled, a group introduction was in order. Alumni from the class of 1968 all the way to the class of 2012 were in attendance. That's over four decades of alumni in one place.
Club members were able to exchange tales of Howard University past and present. While much has changed, the love of Howard remained the same amongst all. The happy hour also served as a networking event as Bison met some new faces and got reacquainted with familiar ones. Before leaving many exchanged business cards and contact information. Those same warm embraces and big smiles served as a goodbye as the group wished each other a safe trip and parted ways.
Want to be apart of this wonderful atmosphere? The club hosts several happy hours throughout the year at different locations around the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Make sure you stay plugged-in with the Howard University Alumni Club of Baltimore. We're now on Instagram and you can always find us on Facebook.
